Sweetwater or Brown Water?
Tags:
I have watched over the last couple of years as The Sewickley Herald has repeatedly failed to report actual news in our fair town and instead turned into more of a social newsletter.
Why is it that Sewickley's water turns the most horrifying shade of brown once, if not two or three times a month and pen is not put to paper?
It's not like this only affects residents in their homes as they try to fill a pan of water to boil pasta or run a bath for a child. My husband, 15 month old, and myself were at the Sharp Edge a few weeks back and watched as they frantically tried to run the water until it was clear (never happened). It appears that the Herald is the lapdog of the business establishments in town, why aren't they reporting on how our water system affects commerce?
I have called the town manager several times and he always pushes me on to the water authority manager. The water authority manager blames the strength of the newly updated system, hospital flushing, water main breaks, old pipes, and on and on and on. Oh and maybe it's the fault of the pipes in our house, that's always a fav.
This is ridiculous. I have lived in numerous cities around the country and abroad and never run into brown water several times a month. The outlandish taxes I pay to live in the village only serve to increase my furor as I give my child a 'babywipes bath' because the tub is full of scumwater rather than "Sweetwater".
Another excuse is "Well, you know, our town is really old and has one of the oldest sewage....." Blah, blah, excuses for the inexcusable. Get someone in the water office that knows what they're doing or at least cares. Has anyone else noticed this problem or brought it up as an issue with the municipality?

Yes Patrick Keane, I read these before posting my initial blog; that's why I'm so irritated, all of this money for naught.
Why would I post a blog without first researching?
Instead of complaining about the newspaper, READ IT.

Hello "Writerboy" I hope you work for the newspaper because posting links would just about sum up the quality of output from the Sewickley Social Updater.
Did you notice that none of these articles deal with the issue at hand? I took it upon myself to do a Google search before issuing my complaint and found nothing noting our brown water problem.
And why is it that you would take such issue with an individual complaining about the quality of the Herald? A good journalist takes criticism and examines it. The Sewickley Herald is a social newsletter. It doesn't really take anything of substance on. When it does "report" it's usually very one sided, you see very few quotes from all parties concerned or involved.
Now go ahead and post another ten links and make sure that one of them is from 2003 like your final listing.
Ms. Nicole Felice:
First, I no longer work at the SSU, as you so lovingly named it. I hope you don't mind if I use that moniiker. I whole-heartedly agree.
Second, I do still live in Sewickley. Although the water does become discolored once - maybe twice - each year, people have come to expect it. It's been happening for years, I am told, so no one is complaining. Therefore it is not news.
Needless to say, the "brown" water is the result of the Sewickley Water Authority flushing the system. It is simply iron and is perfectly safe to drink.
However, if this discoloration occurs more often than once every six months or so, you should contact the water authority or the borough manager.
Third - and this is just a suggestion - personal attacks will get you no where, especially with reporters. A simple phone call to a reporter would be much more appreciated than stating an over-used and over-simplified "who, what, where, why, when." It is demeaning.
