Week 6 Warriors vs Invaders
The Warriors faced off against the Invaders on Saturday night, but it seemed more like the refs were their opponent. On an extremely hot and humid evening, the Invaders took the opening kick-off and advanced to the Warriors 19 yard line. In response, the Warriors strapped down and stopped the drive. The Invaders attempted a field goal, but pressure on the Invaders right side made the kick sail wide to the left. The Warriors took possession of the ball. With a good mixture of run and pass plays, they moved the ball to the Invaders 40 yard line. On the next play QB David Brickner threw a perfect pass to WR Will Peake in the corner of the end zone for a touch down. However, the extra point attempt was missed. The Warriors opened the lead 6 to 0 and it seemed that the Warriors were in control of the game as the defense had three quick sacks in a row from Jerry Rostchild, Anthony Raspberry and Ameer Dudley, but on the upcoming punt, luck would swing the Invaders way. The punt attempt was partially blocked by Justin Jones and the ball sailed about 10 yards over the line. It caught Anthony Raspberry off guard as he tried to field a difficult punt, the football rolled off his hands and was recovered by the Invaders. Two plays later the Warriors rush was on, sacking the Invaders QB. With Warriors defenders draped over him,
the Invaders QB pushed the ball into the hands of his RB who in turn ran the ball around left end for a 20 yard gain. A 15-yard facemask penalty was tacked on at the end of the run. The next play, Warriors linebacker Ameer Dudley came off the corner at a bad angle missing the sack. The Invaders QB hit the corner and was tackled15 yards down the field. Another 15 yard facemask penalty was attached to the run, giving the Invaders the ball at the Warriors 3 yard line. Two plays later he Invaders went in for the touchdown, then made the extra point putting the Invaders ahead 7 - 6 at the end of the first half.
The second half was much like the first. The Warrior defense was tired, but wouldn’t break. Both teams were forced to punt in a field position game and the Warriors were winning the battle. But, on 3rd and 21 from the Invaders 2 yard line, the Invaders RB on a half back pass threw the ball to what looked to be a Warrior defender. As Justin Jones tried to plant his foot to jump he rolled his ankle and could not get up high enough. The ball was caught by the Invaders WR, then Warriors Safety, Ashley Merida, came over to make the tackle. An Invaders player was trailing the play as the Invaders WR pitched the ball backwards. The Warriors could do nothing but chase the WR down the field on what turned out to be a 98-yard pass play for a touchdown. With plenty of time left in the game the Warriors made their push to tie the game. On the Invaders next possession, on second down, continued on page 4

the Invaders QB was blindsided by LB Anthony Raspberry and Tony Taormina forced a fumble, giving the ball to the Warriors on the Invaders 35 yard line. The Warriors were driving as RB Antwan Peoples ran the ball up the middle of the line. After he was tackled, Peoples dropped the ball as he stood up. The refs called it a fumble and turned over the ball to the Invaders. In the 4thquarter the Invaders held on to the ball for 5 minutes but were forced to punt the ball. The Invaders punter had a great kick and the ball rolled to the Warriors 7 yard line. Two plays later QB Brickner threw a pass to WR Terry Hubbard, who caught it and ran 50 yards before being forced out of bounds. The drive stalled on the
Invaders 40 when Warriors receiver Jerome Jones was hit while attempting to catch a ball and the Invaders DB was called for pass interference, but the head referee waived off the call. The turnover on downs gave the Invaders the ball with 5 minutes left on the clock. The Invaders tried to run out the clock, but the Warriors defense dug deep and forced them to punt with forty seconds left On the ensuing punt the Warriors took the ball on the their 25 yard line. With great blocking and some shake and bake Will Peake sprinted down the sideline needing
one block to take it to the house. Unfortunately, Peake was tackled on the Invaders 30 yard line. The ensuing plays saw QB Brickner take a sack, and throw two deep passes that were incomplete. On the last play from scrimmage, Ty Goosby sprinted down the sideline as QB Brickner launched a last minute “Hail Mary”. Sliding between two players, all three jumped for the ball and while falling Goosby came down with the ball. The flag came out and defensive pass interference was called. As everyone was celebrating the touchdown, the head official yet again
waived the penalty off. This time he overturned the call changing it to offensive pass interference, negating the last minute heroics . The game should have been over but the play was redone. On that attempt the ball sailed out of the end-zone.
