Both area schools sit one spot from the top

Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy currently hold second place in Class AA and A, respectively, in the latest MSA Sports Cup standings, released last week.

The award, given by the official broadcast partner of the WPIAL, goes to the school in each classification with the most points accumulated through the performance of its athletic teams.

In Class AA, Quaker Valley led after the fall sports season, but was overtaken by Shady Side Academy after winter play. The Quakers have 395 points, 45 behind Shady Side's class-leading 440.

It will be difficult for the Quakers to become the first public school to win the MSA Cup at a level below Class AAA, because two of their larger programs -- boys and girls lacrosse -- do not count in the standings because too few schools participate in those sports.

Quaker Valley does have an outside shot, however, and much of that will rest on its girls track & field team's performance in the WPIAL playoffs.

Sewickley Academy has a larger gap to make up in the Class A standings, trailing Serra Catholic 340-260 after the winter season. The Eagles opened up their lead with WPIAL championships in football and basketball.

Nonetheless, the Panthers have a shot to make up that difference, relying mainly on its boys tennis team repeating as the WPIAL champion and progressing deep into the state tournament, a potential haul of 130 points.

The Panthers have won the Class A MSA Cup in all four years of its existence, one of two schools to do so, along with Class AAAA North Allegheny.
