Carol Semple Thompson to enter Hall of Fame

Sewickley Heights native Carol Semple Thompson was selected for one of golf's biggest honors on Tuesday, when it was announced that she would be part of the 2008 induction class into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

The announcement, made at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn., site of this year's U.S. Women's Open, named five of the six inductees for this year, with the sixth to be named later.

Thompson is the winner of dozens of amateur events in her career, including the U.S. Women's Amateur, British Women's Amateur, two wins at the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur and four wins at the U.S. Women's Senior Amateur, most recently in 2002.

"Carol's life in golf is that of the quintessential amateur," said Carol Mann, former U.S. Women's Open champion and also a member of the Hall of Fame.

"Her game is strong but her grace, humility, dedication, and humor are her strongest assets. She has contributed with intelligence and integrity, preserving the best interests of the game of golf in each of her leadership roles."

Joining her in the 2008 class will be three-time professional major winner Denny Shute, golf writer Herbert Warren Wind, course architect Pete Dye and former professional Craig Wood, the first man to win The Masters and U.S. Open in the same year.

The induction is scheduled for Nov. 10 at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla.
