Enter the new year with new attitude
As we prepare to look ahead to the new year with both apprehension and anticipation, we suggest a different kind of measure for 2008 -- perhaps a "caring footprint."
In the coming year, how will our actions, thoughts and words affect those around us -- including those we know well and those we have never met?
It is easy to look at the troubles in the world today and feel more than a little helpless. What can one person do?
That can be done in traditional ways -- making donations to local charities or volunteering at food banks, soup kitchens or other, similar agencies. These are difficult financial times for many in the region, meaning a greater demand for the services those agencies provide.
But there are countless other ways to show we care.
It can be as simple as going to check on elderly neighbors, sharing a smile and a quick hello, while at the same time making sure they are all right.
As we head into the heart of winter, take a couple of minutes to clear the snow and ice from the sidewalk of a neighbor who may not be able to do it himself.
If you see a member of the military or know a family with a loved one serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, make sure they know you appreciate their sacrifice and that they will be in your thoughts and prayers.
On the pages of this newspaper over the past several weeks, we have shared stories illustrating the importance of organ donation.
What better way to show you care than by agreeing to give the gift of life to another?
The list could go on and on.
The most important thing is to resolve to do whatever we can to brighten others' lives in 2008. And in doing so, chances are we will brighten our own as well.
Have an impact. Leave a lasting impression -- a "caring footprint," if you will.
