Hoch wins WPIAL title, Sunder takes third

Sewickley Academy senior Matt Hoch had been a WPIAL champion as a tennis player and a soccer player before, but always with a team. Now he has a district championship all to himself.

Hoch defeated Winchester Thurston's Daniel Goldblum, 6-0, 6-3, in the finals of the WPIAL Class AA Singles Tournament at North Allegheny on Friday, ending a tournament in which he lost no more than three games in any match.

"I've played him before and I knew how to play against him," Hoch said of Goldbum.

"I can definitely play a lot better, but I changed my game to play against his weaknesses. I just executed my game plan and won in straight sets."

Hoch's teammate and fellow senior, Vik Sunder, will join him in Hershey for next month's state tournament after winning the third-place match, 6-2, 6-0 over Jim Taylor of Keystone Oaks.

"I haven't been playing my best tennis recently, but I found a way to win and that's all that counts," Sunder said.

"I didn't know anything about (Taylor). He's a great player, actually. I expected it to be a lot less close than it was, but in the first set he had me a little bit nervous."

Hoch had beaten Taylor, 6-0, 6-3, in the semifinals to reach the championship, while Goldblum defeated Sunder in the other semi, 6-1, 6-1.

"I went (to states as an individual) my freshman year and my junior year, and only three of us went," Hoch said.

"Hopefully if our two doubles teams make it this year, six of us can go. That would be great."
