Joy A. Painter
Moon Township resident

Joy A. Painter, 57, a Moon Township resident for 11 years, died on April 25, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She spent her last days at the Family Hospice & Palliative Care Center in Mt. Lebanon surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born in Pittsburgh on March 26, 1951, one of seven children born to the late David and Jeanne (Schweizer) Robinson.

She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church.

Mrs. Painter loved people, and was known for treating everyone kindly and with respect.

Her philosophy was "Always keep God No. 1 in your life, then family and then career."

Joy loved entertaining friends and family, cooking, gardening and vacations to Aruba.

She enjoyed working at Oxford Athletic Club and Spa until her illness caused her to retire.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Gogola; her two children, January Joy Scheidlmeier and husband, Jason, of Shaler, and Daniel Keitel of Bellevue; three sisters, Rebecca Spuhler of Bellevue, Anita Poplowksi and husband, Tom, of Lincoln Place, Pa., and Mary Martin and husband, Robert, of Florida; three brothers, Kenneth Robinson and wife, Bobette, of Pittsburgh, Robert Robinson of Pittsburgh and David Robinson of Euclid, Ohio; three nieces, Melissa, Jennifer and Amanda; two great-nephews and two great-nieces; and her cat, Rocky Road.

A memorial Mass was held at St. Margaret Mary Church. Entombment was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Donations may be to Animal Friends, 562 Camp Horne Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. Arrangements were made by Copeland's of Moon Township.

Jean H. Seymour
Sewickley resident

Jean H. Seymour, 87, of Sewickley, died April 26, 2008 at Wexford House, Good Samaritan Hospice Care's in-house facility. She was born Jean Mae Hagberg in Brainerd, Minn., in 1920, the daughter of Fritz and Mae Hagberg.

She attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., for one year after graduating from Brainerd High School in 1937, and later transferred to the University of Minnesota to complete her bachelor's degree in early childhood education in 1941.

She moved to the West Coast during World War II to help with the war effort, initially at a child-care center in Portland, Ore.

She married Worth Graham Seymour on June 25, 1948, in San Francisco.

They moved to and have remained in Sewickley since early 1958.

In 1971, Mrs. Seymour completed her master's degree as a reading specialist from the University of Pittsburgh. She worked in the Pittsburgh Public Schools in the early 1970s, then at Bidwell Training Center in Manchester for the past three decades in the adult literacy program. She retired once in 1997 and returned to work on a part-time basis from 2006 until December 2007.

She enjoyed the performing arts, especially the symphony, ballet and opera. A lifelong gardener and bridge player, she also took sculpting classes at Sweetwater Center for the Arts during her semiretirement and volunteered many hours in the medical records department at Sewickley Valley Hospital.

She was involved in church affairs, especially at her home parish of St. Stephen's Church, Sewickley, where she served in several capacities, including secretary for the Episcopal Church Women and volunteer at the Christy House.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sally, in 1953; sisters, Mary in 1984 and Katherine in 1987; and husband, Worth, in 1988.

She is survived by her brother, Bob Hagberg of Minneapolis; sister-in-law, Maruja Seymour, of Malaga, Spain; two sons, Michael and wife, Constance, of Martinsburg, Pa., and Henry III and wife, Lisa Baker, of Sewickley; and six grandchildren: Aaron of Kennett Square, Pa., Abigail of Sewickley, Abram and Adam of Martinsburg and Henry IV and Andrew of Sewickley.

A memorial service was held at St. Stephen's Church.

Betty (Gray) Norris
Sewickley resident

Betty (Gray) Norris, 83, a resident of Sewickley for the past 41 years, died April 21, 2008, at Sewickley Valley Hospital.

She was born in Pittsburgh on Nov. 4, 1924, to the late Robert W. and Nellie M. (Winter) Gray.

On Sept. 22, 1987, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 39 years, Scott A. Norris Jr.

While working as a flight attendant from 1946 to 1948, she met her husband and they married on Aug. 23, 1948. Together, they built the home they both loved from 1965-1966.

As an avid gardener, she beautified the outside with flowers, trees and shrubs. The couple had frequent wildlife visits in their yard from deer, turkeys and geese. Family, friends and wildlife, all enjoyed her beautiful outside haven.

She also worked for several years as an antique dealer for the Wagon Shed in Wexford, where she specialized in miniatures. She also was a collector of dollhouses.

She is survived by her three children, Cynthia G. Norris of Sewickley, Scott A. Norris III and wife, Susan, of LaGrange, Ky., and Robert W. Norris and wife, Margaret, of Waxhaw, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Gray Dallas, Geoffrey Scott Snyder, Scott A. Norris IV, George Warren Norris and fiancee, Bridget Kane, and Robert Warren Norris II; and one brother, Matthew Gary and wife, Carol, of McCandless Township.

She also is survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service was held at The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley, 414 Grant St., with the Rev. Dana Jones, officiating.

Burial was private in Sewickley Cemetery.

Gloria Masterani
Edgeworth resident

Gloria M. (Fantone) Masterani, 77, an Edgeworth resident for most of her life, died April 23, 2008, at Friendship Ridge.

She was born in Midland, Pa., on May 5, 1930, the youngest of nine children born to the late Frank Joseph and Mary (Donatelli) Fantone.

She graduated from Midland High School, Class of 1948. She attended Sewickley Valley Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1951. During that time, she met Thomas A. Masterani Sr., whom she married on May 17, 1952. He died on Dec. 13, 2001.

The couple had three children.

She loved to cook, bake, sew clothes for the children and later, spend time with her grandchildren.

She baked the most wonderful fruit pies with the flakiest crust, honey balls, cannoli, lady locks and Easter pie.

She was a faithful member of St. James Church and its Women's Guild.

Mrs. Masterani enjoyed being creative in arts and crafts and was talented in sketching, playing piano and teaching and playing bridge.

She is survived her children, Thomas A. Masterani Jr. and wife, Diane, of Burbank, Calif., Karen L. Parker and husband, Richard, of Edgeworth and Teresa M. Hicks and husband, Kerry, of Reading, Pa.; five grandchildren, Virginia Linenberger and husband, Darrick, Valerie Walland and husband, Joe, and Brian, Sarah and Michael Parker; one great-grandson, Darrick Jr.; and three sisters: Theresa White of Springfield, Va., Mary Hawthorne and Dolores Fantone, both of Beaver, Pa.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers, Genevieve Beaver, Erminia Kashi and Richard, Frank and John Fantone.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in St. James Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery.

Ruth Foleno
Former Sewickley resident

Ruth L. Foleno, 84, of Edgewater, Fla., died peacefully April 25, 2008, at Hospice Volusial Flagler Center.

She was born in Pittsburgh on Feb. 22, 1924. She moved to Florida in 1980 from Sewickley, where she retired as a registered nurse from Sewickley Valley Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, and daughter, Carol Antolini. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Lou, and son, Tom, both of Edgewater, Fla.; two grandchildren, Roberta (Robbie) Clark and husband, Dave, and Ken Antolini and wife, Michelle; and two great-grand children, Justin and Brooklyn.

She also was loved by many nieces and nephews and by many friends and her sister-in-law, Ann Pawlish.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbridge Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

A memorial service will be held in Sewickley at a later date.
