Out and about

Folks usually come back home for family, church or class reunions.

But for 42 years, every first weekend in August, Sewickley Valley African American folks "Come On Home" for a community/town reunion. Theirs is a festive weekend of meeting and greeting friends and relatives. It is also a celebration of diversity and is open to all.

• This year's Sewickley Come On Home Weekend gets under way, on July 31 with a Night at the Races at the Walter Robinson American Legion Post 450, 20 Chadwick St., Sewickley.

Post time is 7 p.m. Admission is free.

• On Aug. 1, a bowling outing for participants 18 and older will be held at the Baden lanes "Jimmy Maggs" at 7 p.m.

The price of $20 includes bowling shoes and prizes.

There are limited reservations for this event.

• Also at 9 p.m. Aug. 1, karaoke with disc jockeys, Junie and Gloria, will be held at American Legion Post 450.

• The Saturday night Come On Home Cabaret has been considered the centerpiece of the weekend.

The 2008 honorees will be the uriginal Walter Robinson American Legion Post 450 Drill Team. The cabaret will be held Aug. 2 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the American Legion Post 450, featuring The Platinum Band. Price is $15 in advance and $17 at the door. Bring your own snacks and beverages.

• The weekend concludes on Aug. 3 with the traditional Sunday morning worship at the family church.

During the Come On Home events, the kitchen at Post 450 will be open with food for sale.

Jazz in Wolcott Park

The Sweet Jazz Summer Series continues in Wolcott Park, Sewickley, from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow. The Tim Stevens Project will perform at the gazebo on the corner of Broad and Beaver streets.

The musicians include Tim Stevens, Tim Jenkins, Luther DeJarunett, Dwayne Dolphin and Fletcher Tomlin.

Stevens, an alumni of the University of Pittsburgh, has served as the church organist and choir director at Trinity A.M.E. Church since October 1972.

He has been jazz editor for Pittsburgh Magazine since 1994.

He has been on the same bill with national acts such as Count Basie Sammy Davis Jr., Ronnie Dyson, Billy Eckstine, The Four Freshmen, Michael Franks, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich.

This event is free and hosted by Sweetwater Center for the Arts and Clearview Federal Credit Union.

Salsa sounds

Salsa Saturdays continue on July 19 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the parking lot of Sewickley United Methodist Church, Broad and Thorn streets, Sewickley.

Stop by for salsa lessons and snacks.

The event is sponsored by Sewickley Chamber of Commerce.

Yoga in the Park

On Saturdays through July 26, weather permitting, yoga lessons will be given in War Memorial Park near Sewickley Valley YMCA.

Terri from Yoga in Sewickley will teach from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Bring a mat or a beach towel.

The cost is $5 per person or $10 per family.

At the library

Sewickley Public Library has scheduled several events this month.

• The PG-rated movie, "The Ultimate Gift," will be shown at 2 p.m. today. No registration is required.

• The Brown Bag Book Club will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 24.

Those attending are encouraged to bring a lunch and join in the discussion led by Rosa Lamour Dorman and librarian Mary Jean Voigt. Pick up a copy of this month's book, "On Chesil Beach," by Ian McEwan.
