Sewickley Legion runs low on players

Wins have been elusive for the Sewickley Legion baseball team this year.

On Tuesday, Sewickley couldn't even get a game.

Sewickley was forced to forfeit its game at West View-Ross due to having just seven players in attendance, a move that will go down as a 7-0 loss on the official record. It's the first time the team has had to drop a game in that manner, but attendance issues have plagued the team all year.

"We've had a couple games that we've only had nine guys," said former Sewickley Academy player Bennet Poepping.

"One game we really only had eight, and we had to put a guy out there who was injured."

The problem comes from a number of issues, ranging from players' work schedules to the possibility of players getting discouraged after some tough losses in a 1-10 season, so far.

"A lot of kids go away for vacation, and when they hear the team's not doing so well, they don't bother to find out when the next game is," Poepping said.

"It's mostly the same kids that are showing up for each game."

"There's guys on vacation and there's some miscommunication, not being able to get a hold of everyone," assistant coach Mike Kalis said.

"You've got to give credit to the guys that have been here, because we've lost a few tough games. (Head coach) Zach (Ciccone) and I have been really proud of the way those guys are playing. There's only so much you can do with nine or 10 guys."

With their record at the season's midpoint, a repeat berth in the Allegheny County Playoffs is basically out of the question for the Sewickley team. That doesn't mean the players are ready to throw in the towel, however, as many of them seek game action.

"I hope (we finish the year), because I want to get the most out of this that I can," said Poepping, who will play for Carnegie Mellon's club team next year.

"This is the only team I'm playing on this summer, so I want to be as prepared as possible for next year."

The postponement of a game scheduled for last night means that Sewickley doesn't have another game on the schedule until Sunday, at home against Moon.

With 11 games remaining, including two against winless Elliott, there chance of things taking an upward turn exists, assuming the team can get enough players to turn out.

"Zach and I will work this out with the rest of the guys," Kalis said.

"This season, a lot of the games have come down to a few small things, little errors that add up. Afterward, I'm left saying that we should have beaten that team. If we correct a few things, we're winning those games."
