Sewickley serves up six seniors for states
Another week, another historic win for Sewickley Academy.
The WPIAL Class AA doubles championship put a quartet of Panthers on the court, as Matt Kaye and Parth Sharma faced two of their teammates, Alex Miller and Kendall Weir, in the finals at North Allegheny on Friday.
And while a 6-0, 6-4 final gave Kaye and Sharma the WPIAL doubles crown, what was more impressive was the Academy sweep in the individual tennis competitions.
"I couldn't be more excited," Sharma said after the match.
"Team states is the first goal, but as a secondary goal, it's been six seniors to states. We're ecstatic. It's going to be really cool."
"Individuals isn't worth as much as the team rounds, but when you have six players all there rooting for each other, it's almost like team all over again," Kaye said.
For the winning pair, the achievement is bigger because the two only began playing as a doubles team in the section competition, two weeks ago.
"We're developing our chemistry very well, and we're communicating much better than we were before," Sharma said.
"I think we're playing well, but there's definitely room for improvement. This is a good step," Kaye added.
The score in the finals was identical to when the same two teams met in the Section 3-AA final, one week earlier.
But while Kaye and Sharma have shown an advantage in their matchups with Miller and Weir, the winning duo sees no reason their teammates won't be able to make a move in Hershey, as well.
"Kendall (Weir) and Miller, they're a real good team, and they're equal to a lot of the teams we'll see in states," Sharma said.
"They're playing No. 2 doubles for our team and they made the WPIAL finals," Kaye said.
"I'm sure they wanted to play better today, but give them props, they played extremely well yesterday to get here."
