Special events around town
Pamela Squires, owner of Pie In The Sky Jewelry, in Sewickley, announces "The Dog and Cat Days of Summer" event. This month, 10 percent of proceeds from her shop at Beaver and Blackburn Roat, will be donated to a non-kill animal shelter for homeless dogs and cats.
Judy Bailey, Squires' aunt, owner of Soho and partner in the newly opened Kidding Around, also will participate during this give back period.
In August, Squires will donate 10 percent of all sales to the Inflammable Bowel Disease Center with hopes to raise awareness of Crohn's Disease and colitis.
River boat cruise
Rediscover the golden era of majestic river boats as part of a coach tour, offered by Old Economy Village, to Marietta, Ohio's American Sternwheel Association's annual Stern-wheeler Festival. The three-day, two-night tour departs Sept. 5 and returns Sept. 7.
Participants will discover the story of steamboat travel along the Ohio River while learning about the Harmony Society's investments in riverboats for travel and commerce.
Accompanying the tour will be B.G. Shields, past executive director of the Sewickley Valley Historical Society.
Guests will visit the Hannibal Locks and Dam, exploring its unique wicket dam and manuever boat display.; board the W.P. Snyder Jr., the last intact steam-powered, stern-wheeled towboat in the United States; then step back in time at the first organized American settlement in the Northwest Territory.
No trip would be complete without fireworks on the Ohio River levee, a visit to the Marietta Earthworks built by the Hopewell culture (100 B.C. -- A.D. 500) or a chat with Commodore Abraham Whipple, Marietta's-own "American Revolution Naval hero."
There also will be a sternwheeler race.
Registration includes an escorted narrated trip aboard a deluxe motor coach, admission fees to museums, taxes and gratuities on included meals and lodgings, one lunch and one dinner, two nights lodging, two continental breakfasts and one dinner cruise on a sternwheeler.
The cost is $475 per person, double occupancy, $656 per person, single occupancy, through July 19, with a maximum of 2 to 4 persons per room.

Senior Men's Club
After enjoying the Fourth of July holiday this Friday, the club's programs will resume on July 11 with a visit from Don Reinhart Jr., owner of Sewickley Cafe.
He will give a cooking demonstration.
Then on July 18, Jim Cook, member of the club, will give a PowerPoint presentation on Africa.
On July 25, Kathy Rooney and Ray Sokolowski, illustrators, will speak about "The Vatican and Its Treasures."
The Senior Men's Club meets every Friday at Sewickley Valley YMCA on Blackburn Road in Sewickley.
Area retired men are invited to attend a meeting and to join the club.
Members gather at 9:30 a.m. for coffee and conversation.
Programs begin at 10.
