Sports briefs: Fitzgerald places in top half of bowling regional

Quaker Valley junior Shelby Fitzgerald competed at the girls western regional bowling championships at Westway Lanes in Girard, Feb. 29-Mar. 2.

Fitzgerald finished in 36th place out of the 85 competing bowlers, bowling a six-game total score of 969, an average of 161.5 per game.

Her high game in the competition was a 171, while she was consistent throughout the competition in rolling just one game below 160.

The girls champion was Plum's Marissa Matassa, who won two stepladder matches before beating Greensburg Salem's Chrissy Benson in the final, 199-194.

Thomas' personal best

Former QV runner Zach Thomas continued his strong collegiate running for Virginia Tech with a seventh-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Thomas' time of 14:41.54 was a personal best, while the top-eight finish earned points in the team scoring for the Hokies.
