Support blossoms into friendships
What began in sorrow has turned into joy.
Twenty years of caring about each other has led members of Sewickley Valley Hospital's Grief Support Group to hold a reunion.
That evening was a celebration of life.
Anita Colarossi, of Crescent Township, was there from the beginning.
She was a volunteer at the hospital and had gotten to know the Rev. Bruce Bryce, part-time chaplain, there.
Three years later, he helped to support her through her widow's grief.
Once Bryce was on staff full time, "Together" was organized. The group first met in the hospital's conference room, then at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.
As it continued, the membership strengthened. With everyone at different stages of grieving, everyone could be of help. Soon lonely days became much sunnier.
Often, when the support session ended each month, a few members carried on their conversations at Eat'n Park.
"No one wanted to go home to an empty house," Colarossi said.
Every third Thursday, their friendships continued, but now as "family."
While hundreds have attended the group, she said, a few still come together in a social circle.
It's a date Colarossi looks forward to each month.
"I'm always busy with the group."
